Education is widely recognized as a fundamental right, yet millions of underprivileged children in India are denied this basic necessity. Poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and social inequalities are among the factors that contribute to the educational disparity in the country. For these children, education provides an avenue out of poverty and an opportunity to build a brighter future.

Teaching Underprivileged Children: A Volunteer Experience in IndiaBy volunteering to teach underprivilege children, one becomes an agent of change, equipping them with knowledge and skills that can break the cycle of poverty. Teaching underprivileged children extends beyond the transmission of academic knowledge. It instills hope, self-confidence, and motivation within them to overcome their circumstances. Education equips them with the necessary tools to navigate challenges and empowers them to actively participate in society. Underprivileged children in India face numerous obstacles that impede their access to education. Poverty often forces them into child labor or early marriages, depriving them of their childhood and educational prospects. Additionally, inadequate infrastructure, a lack of qualified teachers, and overcrowded classrooms further exacerbate the problem. Moreover, girls from marginalized communities encounter additional barriers due to gender discrimination and cultural norms. They are often burdened with household chores or married off at a young age, hindering their educational pursuits. By volunteering in India to teach underprivileged children, one can help dismantle these barriers and foster a more inclusive and equitable society. The act of volunteering to teach underprivileged children in India can have a profound impact on both the children and the volunteers themselves. For the children, it offers an environment conducive to learning and growth.

Volunteers in India can make a tangible difference by improving academic performance, enhancing critical thinking skills, and nurturing a love for learning. Additionally, volunteering facilitates cultural exchange and understanding. It allows volunteers to immerse themselves in the local community, gain insights into Indian culture, and develop a global perspective. This cross-cultural experience not only enriches the lives of the volunteers but also promotes tolerance and empathy. If one is inspired to make a difference by teaching underprivileged children in India, there are various avenues through which they can get involved. Numerous non-profit volunteer organizations in India and NGOs offer volunteer programs with a specific focus on education. These organizations provide training, support, and placement opportunities to ensure that volunteers can contribute effectively. However, before embarking on a volunteering journey, it is essential to conduct thorough research and select a reputable organization aligned with one’s values and goals.

Consider factors such as the organization’s track record, transparency, and the level of support they provide to volunteers. Additionally, familiarizing oneself with the local culture, customs, and educational system will contribute to a more meaningful and impactful experience. Teaching underprivileged children in India through volunteering is a powerful means of addressing educational disparities and empowering disadvantaged communities. By imparting knowledge, skills, and hope, volunteers can make a lasting impact on the lives of these children. Through education, these children can rise above their circumstances and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. If one is passionate about education and social justice, volunteering to teach underprivileged children in India should be considered an experience that not only transforms their lives but also enriches one’s own.

Volunteer Review by Romaine, France

Doing for the first time a volunteer abroad as a seventeen-year-old French girl. I am still learning how to speak English well. Indeed, it is really open to every age and different level of English.
Because without knowing exactly how this trip would look like it could be easy to worry about so many things. For example, would communication be complicated? Would it be hard to be around people that are much older? or else How to be sure to behave well without knowing precisely the codes of Indian culture?

And at the end everything was just perfect. Indeed, the language doesn’t matter so much because you always find a way to communicate with at least one person who understands English. Also, all the people are very present for you if you need anything.

Everyone is kind and open-minded. Local people are very friendly and interested in learning and sharing their culture.
So if you might need to take one thing from this review is just to be confident about this program and that will just bring you so much enriching and improving skills.

Ps: In addition to all of that, I really want to mention how enlightening this experience is! Spending time with Indian people for 4 weeks and being really immersed in their daily life made this trip more memorable because you truly discovered Indian culture. Another thing that is excellent is the different trips we have the possibility to do because they can teach you so much. So, I really recommend you try the trek in the Himalaya and also the visit to the Taj Mahal 🙂

There are two parts to the program I did. The first is the day-to-day in a rural Indian Village in the Himalayas. From Mon-Fri you will spend 4 hours a day teaching, playing, and impacting people in the community, for the rest of the time you can explore the mountains, the different cities (30 min from Dalai Lama and Dharamsala), or just relax and take in the peaceful ambience of the private volunteer terrace. The other part is the excursions, of which they offer many. From the Ganges to the Golden Temple and the Himalayas to the Taj Mahal, each one can touch your soul in a different way.

Lastly, to me, the good hearts and good minds of the people here make this a great choice of program to truly experience India.
